Study finds that vision therapy can help ADHD sufferers

By Staff Writer

A study from the University of California in San Diego shows that vision therapy might be able to help children who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), reports WPTV.

Researchers said that children with the condition have a difficult time keeping both eyes focused on a close target, which can cause trouble when they are trying to read. Furthermore, they suggested that no child should be diagnosed with ADHD without first having their vision system checked.

Furthermore, children with ADHD were found to be three times more likely to have a convergence insufficiency – a common near vision problem – than others without the condition. Individuals who suffer from this disability often exhibit behaviors such as daydreaming, forgetfulness, constant movement and impulsivity.

Therapeutic boarding schools can help children who suffer from the symptoms of ADHD by offering individualized therapy and education designed to help them improve behavior and academics.

Studies from the American Psychiatric Association found that between 3 and 7 percent of school-aged children have ADHD.
