Study finds that ADHD sufferers might have more difficulties controlling their bladder

By Staff Writer

A recent study published in the Journal of Urology shows that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be more at risk of bladder control problems than child who do not have the learning disability.

The study found that young ADHD sufferers tended to have more problems with bedwetting and feeling the need to go to the bathroom. Researchers say they do not have any concrete evidence as to why this occurs. However, they theorize that it may have to do with the stimulant medications used to treat the condition.

Children in the study were given a questionnaire and a symptom diary. They were also given an exam that scored their symptoms. On average, children with ADHA were received a score of 11 on the exam. Researchers said that a score on nine suggests bladder problems. The control group, who did not have ADHD, had an average score of three.

Furthermore, researchers found that 22 percent of the ADHD group had problems like bedwetting or urinary incontinence over a three day period. Comparatively, only 5 percent of the control group suffered the same symptoms.

Enrolling children with ADHD in education institutions such as boarding schools may help them by offering individual attention and small classes to overcome the issues linked to the condition.
