Strong family ties can lead to healthier teens

By Staff Writer

Experts from the Head and heart Counseling in Vancouver revealed that the overall health and strength of the family unit during a child’s early years can have a massive effect on how young people progress through their teenage years, reports Chilliwack Times.

A child who does not have enough structure or responsibilities can have difficulties developing the controls to prevent behaviors such as substance abuse. Furthermore, teenagers are challenged to find a balance between staying close to family and forging their own identity. Experts say that the health of the family can determine how well the teenager’s mental health translates into adulthood.

However, too much parental interaction can cause teens to not separate themselves enough or become rebellious, which can lead to increased opportunities for risky behavior.

Analysts say that the general adolescent population is most susceptible to anxiety, depression and substance abuse, which can lead to social withdrawal, decreased appetite and trouble sleeping.

Teen boarding schools can help adolescents and their parents by providing an environment that promotes healthy choices and goals through education and individualized therapy.
