Research: ADHD sufferers more likely to become criminals

By Staff Writer

A recent study from the Royal Ottawa Health Center found that individuals diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to engage in criminal activity in adulthood, reports the Toronto Sun.

Researchers revealed that almost half of all youth offenders and a third of adult offenders have a hyperactive or inattentive condition. They suggested that while knowledge of the disorder is still premature, there is enough information to diagnose and treat individuals before they make negative life choices.

Furthermore, the research showed that nearly 5 percent of kids deal with significant ADHD and that the diagnosis is usually made at the age of 7. Sufferers of this condition usually exhibit symptoms such as loss of concentration, excessive fidgeting, and impulsive behavior.

Officials warn that children with the condition who are put on medication are more likely to become dependent on it rather than seeking healthy ways to conquer the disorder.

Therapeutic boarding schools can help children who suffer from ADHD by offering educational and recreational activities designed to help them make healthy life choices.

According to a 2007 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5.4 million children between the ages of 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.
