One teacher aims to help autistic students overcome their learning disabilities

By Staff Writer

Individuals who help teach autistic children may be tough to come by. The need for professionals in the special education sector continues to be a glaring need for America, considering that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every 110 children born will eventually be diagnosed with the condition.

However, one South Carolina teacher is making it his life's work to help children who suffer from autism, The Associated Press reports.

"I believe we have to give back on this earth," Andrew Lipps, 48, told the news source. "Teaching students with autism is what I am supposed to do."

The curriculum he uses is academically oriented and sprinkles in appropriate social and communication skills training. He also designs his instruction for his students based on their individual requirements, which include various classroom settings where they can be successful. Lipps also provides resource help for individuals who need extra support.

Academic settings like these are commonplace in therapeutic boarding schools. These institutions offer a place conducive to learning and provide one-on-one opportunities for therapy.
