Educators seek to unify teaching of autistic children

By Staff Writer

New Jersey special-education system officials have found that nearly one out of 94 children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is higher than the national rate, reports the Courier News.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that approximately one in 70 New Jersey boys suffer from an ASD. Individuals with the condition often exhibit significant language delays, unusual interests and social and communication challenges.

However, many educators across the state claim that there is no uniformity in how they teach children with autism. They told the news source that districts close in proximity are doing “radically different things” when it comes to how they approach preparing autistic children for life outside school.

Teachers across the state are finding it difficult to measure acceptable education and their students' progress without a uniform system to draw from.

Therapeutic boarding schools can help children who suffer from autism by offering individualized education designed to help them achieve behavioral, social and academic success.

According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 110 children are currently diagnosed with an ASD. Furthermore, nearly 36,500 children are born with the condition each year.
