How do You Know if Your Child Needs a Therapeutic Boarding School?
Your child isn't achieving his potential in public school and hasn't been for several years, despite your best efforts. Is boarding school the answer?
While boarding school may not be the answer for all children, some benefit greatly from the academic challenge of such a setting. But traditional boarding schools typically admit only those students who are already succeeding academically and behaviorally and may not be equipped to handle a student with behavioral or academic problems.
Therapeutic boarding schools are designed to help those students with special needs. They offer emotional, social and physical guidance to turn out well-educated and motivated graduates. Faculty and staff at these schools are able to give the intensive support and encouragement necessary for your child to get her grades — and her life — back on track. This generally involves intensive individual and group therapy and a highly structured setting.
While there are no hard and fast criteria for making a decision for therapeutic boarding school, you may want to consider this option if your child is consistently experiencing one or more of the following:
- Disregard for family rules and parental guidance
- Trouble getting along with others, both peers and adults
- Violent behavior or destruction of property
- Threatening others
- Difficulty managing anger
- Lying or manipulating situations to escape consequences
- Trouble with school both with grades and behaviorally, challenging authority
- Showing signs of drug or alcohol use
